National Apprenticeship Week takes place annually, and this year it is taking place from the 9th to the 15th of February. This week aims to raise awareness surrounding the benefits of apprenticeships and the opportunities available. Now is a great time to learn more about apprenticeships, explore your options and see if you could be the right fit!

What does an apprenticeship involve?

Apprenticeships combine practical, paid work with studying for a qualification. They can take from 8 months to 6 years to complete, depending on the type and level of the apprenticeship.

These include:

  • Intermediate (Level 2)
  • Advanced (Level 3)
  • Higher (Levels 4 & 5)
  • Degree (Levels 6 & 7)

Who can do an apprenticeship?

You can start an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship if you are aged 16+, and a higher or degree apprenticeship if you are 18+. Entry requirements vary by employer and by level of study, so we recommend that you always check the specific entry requirements on the job listing.

To start an apprenticeship, you should also not currently be in any form of education, including both full-time and part-time.

You can also complete an apprenticeship even if you have previous qualifications, such as a degree.

How do you apply for apprenticeships?

The best way to browse all of the apprenticeships available across the UK and apply is by visiting the Gov.UK ‘Find an apprenticeship’ website. At the time of writing, there are currently 11,082 apprenticeships listed on this page, so there is something for everyone to explore.
