FE to HE
Building on our previous Post-16 initiative, we have enhanced our approach with the FE segmentation tool, which categorises learners into four groups to identify their mindset and needs. Using these insights, we’ve tailored workshops and continue to offer a participation fund for colleges to support career programs.
We’re also planning our first Post-16 multi-partner event, connecting learners with key partners to aid decision-making. Post-event, the segmentation tool will help assess progress and identify gaps, informing future programs for younger age groups.
Breaking the Mould
A strategic project launched the 2023/24 academic year, Breaking the Mould focuses on the underrepresentation of disadvantaged males in higher education. Through a series of workshops and partner trips, we aim to increase knowledge of higher education opportunities and break down the gender stereotypes in education and the workplace.
What Have We Done So Far?
In 2024, we partnered with three secondary schools across Cumbria: Furness Academy, St Joseph’s Catholic High School and St John Henry Newman Catholic School. 10 Year 8 boys from each school took part in the project. We targeted Year 8s as it is important to tackle gender stereotypes in jobs and education early, prior to GCSE choices.
These 30 students from across Cumbria were invited on trips to BAE Systems, the NHS, University of Cumbria and their local colleges (Furness College, Lakes College and Carlisle College).
