Job Title: Zookeeper
Average Salary: £12,000 – £25,000
Typical Hours: 37 – 40 hours
You could work: Evening, Weekends and Bank Holidays
How to become (which path would you choose): I am really interested in going to University for my pathway of choice, and specifically looking in to a degree in animal conservation and biodiversity. To do this I would need to go to do my A-Levels, I need one science, which I would personally would pick Biology + two other A-Levels. I am also looking to see if I can get some work experience or a part time job to help with this experience and show I am willing already.
What skills are required: Teamwork, flexibility, good communication skills, knowledge from my studies, good initiative
What is a typical day like?: Prepare food and feed animals, clean enclosures, check for disease and illness, work with vets to care for sick animals, monitor different conditions, daily records
What are the opportunities for progression?: Team Leader or Head Zookeeper. I could also become a curator or a researcher, depending on which route I want to go down.
