Kane’s Story

18 years old, Barrow-in-Furness

Why did you decide to study Marketing?

I studied Business A Level for a term at college, but then I realised A Levels weren’t the right choice for me, so I looked into the paths within business as I still wanted to develop in business and there was a Digital Marketing opportunity which really interested me.

Why did you decide on this college?

Due to studying at Barrow Sixth Form College and releasing this wasn’t right for me, my business tutor showed me this opening within the college and I realised it was everything I wanted to do and it was perfect to study at Furness College with all their state-of-the-art facilities.

What did you want to be as a child?

I had very little idea what I wanted to do as a child but I always could see myself doing business type work as this is what I was most interested in.

Has your career or education taken any unexpected turns? What were they?

I always saw myself studying for my A Levels and then progressing onto university and achieving a degree however as previously stated A Levels weren’t the right path as I prefer to learn about real world situations. Also, during my apprenticeship the coronavirus pandemic had a large impact as I suddenly had to work from home and re-adjust to the new normal.

What did you study at college? Why?

I studied Business, Psychology and I.T for a term as I found these the most interesting subjects and the subjects I particularly excelled in.

How did you decide what to do after college?

I never really decided what I wanted to do until I saw the apprenticeship and applied for it and realised it was the right path for me but prior to that I was rather lost in terms of career goals or aims.

Did anyone help you to decide?

I have to give a lot of credit to my business tutor who opened up the doors to marketing and what it entailed and helped me decide this is what I wanted to do but also my family were very supportive and gave me a lot of advice.

Who influenced you?

Many people influenced my decision to take the opportunity including family and tutors as they too realised that this would be the right path for me.

What support did you get?

I got some support from my family to help me make my decision on the apprenticeship.

What’s the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course is the variety of things I get to do, even though it is a Digital Marketing apprenticeship I have been able to experience almost everything within the marketing field. This means there is never a dull moment in my role and there is almost something new to learn.

What are you looking forward to the most about finishing your apprenticeship?

The thing I look forward to most about finishing my apprenticeship is the avenues that it can open up having studied a real world subject.

Any tips for anyone choosing to study your course?

Take the chance it’s not something I thought I was capable of however you do get the training and support constantly which helps and you become more and more confident you can do it.

What advice would you give to someone from your area?

There’s always options I was always doubtful about being able to get a job however it just shows that opportunities really can come from anywhere.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

I hope to be progressing further within marketing and carrying on with what I’m doing at the moment because I am doing what I love.
